Prince William Was Reportedly ‘Fuming’ Over Request to Change Kate Middleton’s Name Spelling, New Book Claims

A new royal biography claims Prince William was furious over a request to change Catherine’s name spelling, turning a tiny palace detail into a revealing story about identity and loyalty.

A new royal biography has revived an unusual story from the period surrounding Prince William and Kate Middleton’s marriage, claiming that William was furious after his father and Camilla reportedly suggested changing the spelling of Kate’s first name.

According to royal biographer Christopher Andersen, the episode is recounted in his book ‘Kate! The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen’. Andersen writes that the then Prince Charles and Camilla were concerned about the growing number of royal names beginning with the letter “C”. Their own royal monograms already incorporated the initial, and Catherine’s name would introduce another.

The Unusual Request Over Catherine’s Name

The reported solution was surprisingly personal. Catherine was allegedly asked whether she would consider spelling her name with a “K”, becoming “Katherine” rather than “Catherine”. The suggestion was reportedly linked to concerns that having Charles, Camilla and Catherine represented by the same initial could complicate royal monograms and branding.

Andersen claims William reacted angrily to the idea and considered it disrespectful not only to Catherine but also to her family, who had given her the name. The proposal was ultimately dropped, and she continued to use Catherine officially after joining the royal family.

The story itself is not entirely new. Prince Harry had previously referred to a similar episode in his 2023 memoir Spare, describing a suggestion involving the spelling of Catherine’s name and the royal initials. Andersen’s biography now places renewed attention on William’s reported reaction to it.

William’s Protective Side Comes Into Focus

The anecdote is presented as part of a broader portrait of William as fiercely protective of Catherine when he believes she has been treated unfairly or intrusively.

Andersen’s book also revisits moments when the couple confronted intense media scrutiny. One frequently cited example came in 2012, when photographs of Catherine taken during a private holiday were published, prompting legal action from the couple. The biography uses incidents such as this to portray William as particularly sensitive to invasions of his wife’s privacy and dignity.

Seen in that context, the dispute over a single letter becomes less trivial. The issue was not simply whether Catherine’s name began with “C” or “K”, according to the account. For William, it reportedly touched on whether someone entering royal life should have to alter something as fundamental as her own name to accommodate palace conventions.

Catherine Reportedly Did Not Hold A Grudge

Despite William’s reported anger, Andersen portrays Catherine as taking a more measured position. She is said not to have held lasting resentment towards Charles over the episode and apparently believed the suggestion may not have originated entirely with him.

The disagreement also appears small when placed beside the pressures the royal family would face years later, including serious health concerns within the family. The book nevertheless uses the incident to illustrate the extraordinary expectations surrounding someone preparing to enter the monarchy.

Catherine has since made her formal name part of her public royal identity, even though “Kate Middleton” remains the name by which she is widely recognised in popular culture.

A Small Request That Said Something Bigger

What makes the anecdote memorable is not really the difference between Catherine and Katherine. It is what the request supposedly represented.

Royal life has always involved traditions, titles, symbols and carefully managed public presentation. Yet a person’s name sits unusually close to identity itself. According to Andersen’s account, William drew the line there.

The proposal disappeared, Catherine remained Catherine, and the incident became another strange footnote in the long process of transforming a private individual into a future queen.
