Sawan Shivratri is observed on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha. This year, Sawan Shivratri will be celebrated tomorrow on 11 August 2026. On this day, performing Jalabhishek, or offering water to the Shivling, and worshipping Lord Shiva during Nishita Kaal are considered highly auspicious. There is also a tradition of offering the jal (water) from that has been procured during Kanwar Yatra to Lord Shiva on Sawan Shivratri. The day also marks the conclusion of the Kanwar Yatra.

“Shivaratri which falls during Shravana month is known as Sawan Shivaratri. As whole Shravana month is dedicated to perform Shiva Puja, Masa Shivaratri during Sawan month is considered highly auspicious. However, the most significant Shivaratri which is known as Maha Shivaratri falls during February or March which corresponds to Phalguna month according to North Indian calendar,” states Drik Panchang.

However, this year, there is a presence of Bhadra Kaal. It has left devotees wondering whether water can be offered to the Shivling during this period. Here is everything you need to know about the auspicious timings for Jalabhishek and the best time to worship Lord Shiva on Sawan Shivratri.

Bhadra on Sawan Shivratri will be on Earth

According to astrologers, Bhadra will be present during Sawan Shivratri. It will begin at 5:58 am and end at 3:22 pm. During this period, Bhadra will reside on Earth.

According to Hindu belief, when Bhadra resides on Earth, it can cause difficulties for those living here. Therefore, auspicious activities are generally avoided during this period. However, after considering the auspicious timings, devotees can still perform Jalabhishek of the Shivling.

Nishita Kaal for Shiva Puja on Sawan Shivratri

According to the Panchang, the Chaturdashi Tithi will begin at 4:54 am on 11 August and end at 1:52 am in the early hours of 12 August. The auspicious Nishita Kaal for Shiva Puja will be from 12:05 am to 12:48 am.

Auspicious timings for offering Kanwar jal and performing Jalabhishek

On Sawan Shivratri, 11 August 2026, devotees will offer Kanwar jal to Lord Shiva. The Brahma Muhurat for Jalabhishek will be from 5:23 am to 6 am on 11 August.

The Abhijit Muhurat will be from 12:06 pm to 12:58 pm. The Godhuli Muhurat for Jalabhishek will be from 9:13 pm to 9:32 pm.

Jalabhishek and worshipping Lord Shiva should be done during an auspicious Muhurat.

Four Prahar Puja timings for Sawan Shivratri 2026

According to Drik Panchang, “On Shivaratri day devotees should take second bath in the evening before doing Shiva Puja or visiting temple. Shiva Puja should be done during night and devotees should break the fast next day after taking bath. Devotees should break the fast between sunrise and before the end of Chaturdashi Tithi to get maximum benefit of the Vrat. ”

It also adds, “According to one contradictory opinion devotees should break the fast only when Chaturdashi Tithi gets over. But it is believed that both Shiva Puja and Parana i.e. breaking the fast should be done within Chaturdashi Tithi.”
