Ravichandran Ashwin dropped a bombshell on CSK’s search for Stephen Fleming’s replacement as the head coach. The ex-New Zealand captain and the Super Kings parted ways last month after 18 seasons in charge.

Ravichandran Ashwin dropped a bombshell and revealed that Eoin Morgan is set to replace Stephen Fleming as the head coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the 2027 season of the Indian Premier League. The former Indian spinner claimed that a decision on the appointment will be made in the next week.
Morgan has never held a head coach role in his career so far, but his expertise in white-ball cricket is unparalleled. The ex-England captain was responsible for the three lions’ revolution in limited-overs cricket after taking charge in 2015. He led the England cricket team to their only Cricket World Cup title in 2019. The former left-handed batter also led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from midway through the 2020 season till the end of 2021. In his only full season in charge, Morgan led the franchise to the IPL final, where they lost to CSK.
Could MS Dhoni Take Charge For 1 Season?
Ashwin remained doubtful over the timing of the appointment and claimed that MS Dhoni could be in charge in 2027 before Morgan takes over when the new mega-auction cycle begins in 2028.
“I have a strong hunch. Eoin Morgan’s name is strongly linked to the CSK head coach role, per my sources. I think a decision will be made in the next week. Personally, I feel this will go to MS Dhoni and be run by the others. I think that will be the right decision because appointing a replacement for Fleming is a touch late with the mega auction just a year away,” said Ashwin in a video on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin claimed that if Morgan is appointed head coach, Nathan Laemon will join the Men in Yellow’s support staff. For those unversed, the latter is a data analyst, who was part of the England team’s coaching team during Morgan’s captaincy tenure. He also joined KKR when the Englishman was appointed their captain.
