Following the opening day of the series opener between Australia and Bangladesh, Steve Smith admitted that he may have edged the ball off Ebadot Hossain when he was batting on seven. After committing to the delivery, Smith pulled out at the eleventh hour as wicketkeeper Litton Das collected the ball. The Bangladesh team was confident that there was an edge but on-field umpire Kumar Dharamsena remained unmoved. Bangladesh challenged the on-field umpire’s decision and took a DRS. The replays showed that there was no contact between the bat and ball. However, Smith felt that there was an edge.

“I think so. Yeah. I was lucky? Yeah, it seems that way. Yeah. You got to take it sometimes. Normally, it’s pretty good. Yeah, maybe I didn’t nick it. I don’t know but I certainly felt something. If I had been given out, I was going to walk off. But yeah, technology saved me today, I guess,” Smith said at the presser after the first day’s play.

A few overs before this scare, Smith was dropped by Tanzid Tamim at the third slip. He was batting on two runs when he was dropped. Smith went on to score 71 as Australia put on a total of 198 on the board. No other Australian batsman managed to breach the 25-run mark.

Playing their first-ever Test in Australia, Bangladesh dominated the opening day and dismissed the home team for 198. Hasan Mahmud took a six-fer while Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain scalped two wickets each.

Batting with a run rate of four, Bangladesh finished the day with 96 runs on the board at the loss of just one wicket. Tamim and Mominul Haque will kick off the proceedings for the visiting team on the second day.

Bangladesh will aim to bat for more than a day and take a big lead. Team India is the only Asian team to secure a Test series win against Australia Down Under. They achieved the feat in the 2018-19 and 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
