Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was denied bail and sent to 14-day judicial custody by the Chinsurah Court. Porel was arrested by Mogra police over a complaint by a medical student who accused Abishek of having sexual relations over a false promise of marriage. The cricketer was presented before the court on August 11 and sent to three-day judicial custody.

“There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today,” Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh told PTI following Porel’s arrest.

Porel, meanwhile, has denied all the claims made by the complainant.

Reportedly, Abishek and the girl were also involved in a dispute 18 months and it also led to police intervention; however, no FIR was filed then. The complainant later moved to the Calcutta High Court, which directed Mogra Police to arrest Porel and another accused, and seize electronic devices, including mobile phones and laptops, amid concerns over the alleged circulation of private photos and videos.

Reportedly, a case has been registered under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 69, and provisions of the Information Technology Act.

Porel, who also plays domestic cricket for Bengal, has been a regular member of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, and has also represented India A.
