Indian equity markets snapped a two-week gaining streak this week, with both the Nifty and Sensex declining nearly 1%. Sectorally, metals, FMCG and autos were among the biggest drags, with the Nifty Metal index falling nearly 2%.

More than 35 Nifty stocks ended the week lower, with losses extending up to 6%. Max Health emerged as the top Nifty loser, while UltraTech Cement, TCS, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and SBI Life also featured among the biggest weekly decliners.

On the other hand, Titan, BEL, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Bharti Airtel and Eternal were among the top Nifty gainers during the week.

Indian equity markets ended lower on Friday after failing to hold on to the intraday recovery in a muted session. The Sensex slipped 71 points to 78,009, while the Nifty declined 30 points to 24,366.

The Nifty Bank bucked the broader trend, gaining 144 points to end at 57,491. The Midcap index also advanced 339 points to 63,782. Market breadth favoured declines, with the advance-decline ratio at 1:1.

Among stocks, Nalco fell 6% and Hindalco declined nearly 2% after Alunorte ramped up production. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles slipped over 4%, with Jaguar Land Rover weighing on the stock after its first-quarter performance.

Zee Entertainment saw a sharp intraday surge after the Securities Appellate Tribunal stayed a SEBI order. Apollo Hospitals ended as the top Nifty gainer, rising over 3% after raising its guidance.

Galaxy Surfactants surged 20% after raising its EBITDA per tonne guidance, while LG Electronics ended at the day’s high, gaining over 9% after its first-quarter results. Ashok Leyland ended nearly 3% lower despite its first-quarter results coming in as a mild beat to estimates.

Dilip Bhat, Founder of Padigree Advisory, said the outlook for the life insurance sector remains upbeat, with significant scope for business growth. He highlighted Max Life, HDFC Life and SBI Life among the companies that stand out, with Max Life his preferred pick, citing its backing and tie-up with Axis and potential for improvement in return on equity and other parameters. On telecom, Bhat said the sector remains capital-intensive and competitive, with Jio and Bharti as the key players. He said Bharti Airtel has already moved up significantly and would prefer to hold rather than buy at current levels, while Vodafone would need a corporate outcome or event for a sustainable rise.

The rupee closed at 95.42 against the US dollar on Friday, compared with Thursday’s close of 95.44/$, strengthening marginally by 2 paise.

The benchmark indices saw mixed movement during the Closing Auction Session (CAS), with the Nifty moving below its 3:15 pm level, while the Sensex and Nifty Bank edged higher. The Nifty stood at 24,355 at 3:15 pm and is now at. Nifty Bank rose from 57,459 to 57,491, while the Sensex moved up from 77,931 to 78,009.

FACT Q1 net loss at ₹61.94 crore vs profit of ₹4.28 crore YoY. FACT shares were trading 1.09% lower at ₹810 on the NSE as of 3:21 pm on August 14, down ₹8.95 from the previous close.

Kalpataru Projects bags ₹3,526 crore orders. At 3:12 pm on August 14, Kalpataru Projects International shares were trading 0.95% lower at ₹1,352.10 on the NSE.

• Within the pharma space, Piramal is trying to get back on its feet, and we have expected margins to recover. That has marginally happened. Going forward, things would again look positive.
• But within the pharma space, I think the CDMO players have been kind of reporting much better numbers and consistently delivering; companies like Divi’s Laboratories, Laurus Labs, and now Gland Pharma also reported good numbers.
• I think we will continue to focus on that. This market is rewarding companies which have delivered strong numbers plus outlook is positive. Piramal: things are looking up.
• The next two quarters would be crucial in terms of growth as well as in terms of margins, and that would be a key monitorable going forward.
