PM Modi Sets Global Business Targets: 50 Fortune 500 Firms, Top-5 Indian Bank

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set some of his biggest ambitions for a developed India (Viksit Bharat). While delivering speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort, he lays out a future in which India has 50 companies among the world’s largest, an Indian bank among the global top five and 100 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity.

“For a comparison of Indian companies with corporations worldwide, the relevant benchmark is the Fortune Global 500, which ranks the world’s largest companies by revenue,” PM Modi said.

In the 2025 Fortune Global 500, India had nine companies. This comprised five public-sector and four private-sector companies. Reliance Industries was the highest-ranked Indian company at No. 88, followed by LIC at No. 95 and Indian Oil at No. 127. SBI, ONGC, HDFC Bank, Tata Motors, BPCL and ICICI Bank were also on the list.

Top five banks globally:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi further pitched for India to come in the list of top five banks globally.

“The banking sector in India is flourishing; one Indian bank should be among the top five globally,” PM Modi said.

According to the S&P Global Market Intelligence’s April 2026 ranking, it puts Industrial and Commercial Bank of China at No. 1 globally with $7.65 trillion of assets.

Further, the Agricultural Bank of China, China Construction Bank and Bank of China occupied the next three positions.

In terms of India, the largest public sector lender, State Bank of India, had $877.07 billion in assets and ranked 19th among Asia-Pacific banks in S&P’s 2026 regional ranking.

PM Modi also said Indian companies should strive to be among the world’s top five pharmaceutical companies.

Manufacturing remained the first pillar of ‘Saptadhara’, with PM Modi calling for a major expansion of India’s manufacturing capabilities.

India had 8.78 GW of installed nuclear power capacity as of July 31, 2026, according to the government. It aims to increase that to 100 GW by 2047 and expects capacity to reach 22.38 GW by 2031-32.
