Steve Smith took three catches in the outfield during the second innings, to dismiss Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das. With these three catches he now has 218 catches in his Test career. He becomes the player with the joint-most number of outfield catches in the history of Tests. He equals the record of England captain Joe Root, who too has 218 catches.

While Root achieved this in 166 Tests, Steve Smith managed to do this in 124 Test matches, which is 42 games less than the England great.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto added 84, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz chipped in with a vital 65. For the Australians, Josh Hazlewood was the lone standout, taking 6/89.

Facing a huge deficit, the hosts found themselves in early trouble again. Mahmud dismissed Jake Weatherald and Travis Head cheaply. Marnus Labuschagne (31) and Smith (44) tried to rebuild but both fell to the spinners. By the end of Day 3, Cameron Green (43*) and Alex Carey (19*) had steadied the ship, taking Australia to 161/4.
