R Ashwin lauded Bangladesh after their stellar performance in the first Test against Australia. The Tigers have outplayed the hosts in Darwin and are marching towards a thumping win, their first in Australia. At stumps on Day 3, Australia have lost four wickets in the second innings and are still 67 runs behind Bangladesh’s lead. Ashwin lauded the team for the tremendous fightback after being bowled out for 54 in the warm-up game.

“Bangladesh have put Australia on the back foot in Darwin, and that couldn’t have been on anyone’s script. From 54 all out in the warm-up game to dominating the first two days of the 1st test. That’s some turnaround. Long may this format live,” Ashwin wrote on X.

Bangladesh dominated Australia from Day 1. Hasan Mahmud’s fiery spell helped the team bowl out Australia for a mere 198. Bangladesh then delivered a strong response with the bat, with Tanzid Hasan scoring a brilliant century. Najmul Hossain Shanto made 84 while Mehidy Hasan Miraz made 64 to put Bangladesh on top. In the second innings, Mahmud again rattled the top order while Taijul Islam and Miraz picked a wicket each to leave Australia reeling.

Game Not Over For Australia

Meanwhile, the game is still not done. A deficit of 67 is not that big, especially with two set batters at the crease. Cameron Green is batting on 43 and Alex Carey is playing well at 19. Both these players can stitch a handy partnership and put up a strong total for Australia. Given Australia’s decorated bowling attack, chasing anything over the 180-200 run mark would be tough for Bangladesh in the second innings.
