Ghost Month is more about expressing respect than fear. Still, the spiritually-aligned will agree – it’s better to be safe.

The seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar is referred to as ‘Ghost Month’. As per centuries of Taoist and Buddhist traditions, this is the month in the year which throws open the gates of the underworld, having it so that restless spirits roam the earthy realm, amidst the living.
If you believe in spirits and the power of the otherworldly, this may sound terrifying. But across East and Southeast Asia where this stretch is routinely observed, Ghost Month is more about being mindful and respectful of these spirits, as opposed to fearing them.
What Does One Do During Ghost Month?
In line with this thinking, those observing the month tend to make food offerings to the spirits, leaving plates of food, fruits and drinks outside of homes and temples. Imitation money called ‘joss paper’ or better yet – ‘hell notes’, are burnt in honour of the spirits so that they may have wealth in their afterlife. The routine floating of water lanterns during this time is potentially the most beautiful part of the little rituals this month comes with. This is done in a bid to guide lost spirits back to where they emerged from. This year, the Ghost Month commenced on August 13 and will be going on till September 10. The middle of this stretch – August 27 – is set to be observed as the Hungry Ghost Festival, which is when all these rituals peak.

But What Does Ghost Month Have to Do with your Bag Charms?
To be clear, no official Ghost Month scriptures mention anything about keeping bag charms tucked away for this month. This is a modern interpretation of a superstition which believes that many of these lost and hungry spirits tend to find their way to figures, looking at them as possible vessels to vest themselves into. Seeing as most bag charms are pint-sized figurines, there are many who avoid wearing them out during this time of the year. This more so applies if your bag charm has a ring to it – literally. Jingling metal accessories are also advised to be kept at bay during this time as these sounds could attract the roaming spirits.
What Else Shouldn’t You Do During Ghost Month?
There are certain restrictions that those observing Ghost Month also take into account. Swimming is a no-no given that many believe ghosts might pull the swimmer under water. Staying out late, walking alone in the dark as well as big life changes like weddings, moving into a new house or starting a new venture are dissuaded. If anything, this is more about keeping yourself safe and spiritually guarded, as opposed to a PSA against possession. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry!
