CCTV Captures Delhi University PhD Scholar Slapping Professor
New Delhi: Delhi University on Monday suspended a PhD scholar from its Faculty of Law and banned his entry into the university premises after he allegedly assaulted and slapped a professor at Umang Bhawan, officials said.
The incident took place at around 10:30 am on Monday. According to the university, CCTV footage of the incident was received by the authorities.
“The incident took place on Monday morning and the student can be seen slapping a professor. A committee has been formed to look into it,” DU Proctor Manoj Kumar Singh told.
The student was admitted to the Faculty of Law in the 2024-25 academic session (Phase-II).
According to a notice issued by the university’s Office of the Proctor, the student has been suspended from the Faculty of Law with immediate effect.
His entry into the University of Delhi premises has also been banned with immediate effect under “Ordinance XV-B of the Delhi University Act, 1922”. The university has also formed a three-member independent enquiry committee to investigate the incident and submit its report.
The committee is headed by Rajeev Gupta of the Department of Chemistry. Vipul Singh of the Department of History and Sudha Singh of the Department of Hindi are its members.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF) strongly condemned the alleged attack and demanded strict and immediate action against the student. According to the DTF, the CCTV footage shows the student allegedly waiting for the professor and attacking him as he entered the building.
The organisation said that while the student has been suspended following the Proctor’s order, suspension alone is not enough. The DTF said incidents of alleged misbehaviour and attacks against teachers have been repeatedly reported on the campus. It also claimed that a student had recently behaved improperly with some professors of the Faculty of Law.
The organisation further said that last year, DUSU Joint Secretary Deepika Jha had allegedly slapped a professor at Dr BR Ambedkar College. The DTF questioned the administration’s response to such incidents and demanded strict and effective measures to ensure the safety of teachers on the university campus.
The enquiry committee will now investigate the latest incident and submit its report to the university.
