India are currently taking on Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match series at the Galle International Stadium. Infia have the upper hand as they have taken a massive lead, and aim to give the Lankans a big target to chase down, so that they have the maximum chances of winning the game, and register some massive points to increase their chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final. During India’s second innings, KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal shared a hilarious and memorable moment.
During the 11th over of India’s second innings, KL Rahul thought that he was trapped LBW off a delivery from Prabhath Jayasuriya. The umpires had given it out, and Rahul was walking back to the dressing room without hesitation. However, Devdutt Padikkal who was at the non-striker’s end suggested that he should go for a review, as it hit him when he was too bent forward while defending, and the ball would have gone way above the stumps.
As the DRS was taken, it was found out that Padikkal was right, and Rahul was judged not out. After this, the India vice-captain hugged Padikkal, and then in a funny incident, gestured to kiss the left-handed batter.
Sri Lanka Need 372 To Win
India seized early control of the match by opting to bat first and piling up a formidable 462 runs. The visitors’ dominance was spearheaded by a brilliant maiden Test century from 24-year-old Devdutt Padikkal, hitting a career-best 167 off 230 balls.
Prabath Jayasuriya was the most successful bowler for the hosts, eventually breaking through the lineup to finish with figures of 4 for 109, while debutant Keshara Nuwantha toiled hard for his 3 for 175.
Sri Lanka’s reply started disastrously. Indian pacers and spinners operated in tandem to reduce the hosts to 90 for 5, staring at a massive follow-on. However, Sonal Dinusha staged a brilliant rescue mission, striking his maiden international century (100 off 168 balls). He was anchored by Niroshan Dickwella, who hit a gritty 80. Together, they constructed a 146-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
India’s spinners eventually finished the job, with Manav Suthar claiming impressive figures of 4/76 and Ravindra Jadeja taking 3/57 to bowl Sri Lanka out for 284.
Looking to bat Sri Lanka out of the game, India pushed their lead forward on Day 4 but found themselves repeatedly pegged back by an inspired Sri Lankan bowling attack. Rishabh Pant was the top scorer in the second innings, displaying his trademark aggression to hit 66 runs. Asitha Fernando claime a four-wicket haul, dismissing India for 193 and ensuring Sri Lanka had a target of 372 to chase with four sessions remaining in the match.
