A 19-year-old man has been seriously injured in a shooting in Savannah, Georgia, with one suspect in custody and another still at large, police said. Officers responded to the area of Largo Drive and Woodley Road near the Allora Apartments after reports of a shooting.

Alderman Kurtis Purtee said officers found the injured man at the scene. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the area remained closed while officers investigated and urged people to avoid it if possible.

Schools and Georgia Southern University were placed under lockdown as authorities searched for the suspects.

The university initially warned that two suspects were at large and said they had last been seen near the Joseph Landings apartment complex on Mercy Boulevard.

One suspect was described as a black man wearing a white tank top, while the other was described as a black man wearing a white T-shirt and khaki trousers. Their direction of travel was not known.

Windsor Forest High School was also placed on lockdown, with doors secured. Students had already been dismissed for the day, but those remaining on campus for after-school activities were brought inside.

At about 16:40 local time, Georgia Southern University said the shelter-in-place order had been lifted after one suspect was taken into custody.

“Please proceed with caution on and around campus,” the university said.

Police said one suspect remained at large.

The investigation is continuing, and authorities have asked people to avoid the area.
