The year was 1999 and Goop-connoisseur, Gwyneth Paltrow was all of 26, all dressed up for an evening at the Oscars. It was a big year for her. Being nominated for an Oscar – let alone in the Best Actress category – is the stuff of actor dreams. It was the blonde beauty’s first Oscar nomination and she coveted as such, walking on to the red carpet before the ceremony, hand in hand with father Bruce Paltrow. Paltrow himself was an acclaimed director, producer and writer, working across American films and television. Needless to say, the evening of March 21, 1999 was a big one for the Paltrows. There was ample chatter around Gwyneth potentially landing a win – but no one actually thought it would happen, especially with her nominated against some real ‘greats’, namely Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth, Fernanda Montenegro for Central Station, Meryl Streep for One True Thing and Emily Watson for Hilary and Jackie. And still, she did. Gwyneth was breathing through her mouth, half in tears only she constantly kept breaking into a giggle as walked up on stage in her custom cotton candy pink taffeta ballgown from Ralph Lauren, all centred in with that stunning Princess necklace from Harry Winston, accepting the Best Actress Oscar for Shakespeare in Love. Needless to say, her parents were reacting pretty much the same way. After all, how many can claim to have seen their little one reach the zenith of their collective line of work, right in front of their eyes?

The gravity of the moment wasn’t lost on Bruce and he wanted to do something grand to commemorate that evening for their family; immortalise it in a way, just like his daughter’s Oscar win. So besides the Oscar, he decided to go for the next most precious thing on his daughter’s being – the Harry Winston necklace. Gwyneth was wearing the exquisite piece of jewellery as a loan from the designer but papa Paltrow decided to buy it as an enduring symbol of that great, grand evening, along with the matching $25,000 cluster earrings. Decades later, it’s only gotten more priceless.

Gwyneth for one, has always been pretty vocal about her consumerist persona. She not only enjoys the finer things in life, but also encourages others towards these indulgences. Needless to say, the actor has no dearth of her own jewellery. Still, the necklace gifted to her by papa Paltrow happens to be one of the most precious things she owns – so much so, that she picked out that very piece as the the gleaming jewellery detail for her wedding look in 2018, almost two decades later, as she said ‘I Do’ to American television writer and director, Brad Falchuk.

Bruce had passed away shortly after his daughter’s Oscar win, back in 2002 and never got to walk her down the aisle – not even for her first wedding to Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin. However, in 2018, the actress made sure that her father was there with her in spirit as she said yes to forever.
