Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan has been transferred from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical treatment following a Supreme Court order.
Imran Khan has not been seen publicly since his imprisonment in 2023.
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been taken from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical treatment, according to reports. Security arrangements were intensified around the hospital, with Islamabad Inspector General and senior police officers arriving at the facility.
Dr. Faisal and Dr. Uzma also reached Adiala Jail. Pakistan’s Supreme Court had ordered that the two doctors accompany Khan during his transfer to the hospital. Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, was also reported to have reached Gate No. 5 of Adiala Jail.
Khan’s Health Concerns
Concerns about Khan’s health have intensified during his imprisonment. In late January, his family said he had lost about 85% of the vision in his right eye, although the government disputed the claim.
Authorities later said Khan had regained about 70% of the vision in the eye and that his condition was improving. His health concerns were among the issues that prompted calls for him to receive medical treatment outside prison.
The Supreme Court ordered that Khan be taken to a private hospital of his choice for examination by a medical board that includes his personal physician. The government had sought clarification on whether the medical relief granted to Khan could also apply to other prisoners, but the court declined to hear the application on technical grounds and asked authorities to complete the required paperwork.
Tight Security At Shifa International Hospital
Preparations at Shifa International Hospital were completed ahead of Khan’s arrival, with increased security movement reported outside the facility. Khan was reportedly transported from Adiala Jail’s Gate No. 5, while arrangements were made for his entry through Gate No. 1 at the hospital.
The transfer came as the deadline set by Pakistan’s Supreme Court for the government to take Khan to a hospital approached midnight Thursday. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the government would comply with the court’s ruling.
Chaudhry also said the government could consider allowing Khan to receive treatment at a private hospital or abroad if adequate care was unavailable at a government facility.
Khan has been imprisoned since Aug. 5, 2023, and is serving a 14-year sentence in the £190 million corruption case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust case. The former cricket star and politician was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022 and has remained imprisoned since 2023 after convictions in multiple cases.
