A tornado warning was issued for parts of Queens and Nassau County on Thursday evening as severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain, flooding and reports of possible tornado activity across the New York region.

Footage circulating online showed what appeared to be a waterspout forming offshore near Atlantic Beach on Long Island as a tornado-warned storm moved through the area. Possible storm damage was also reported at the Sun and Surf Beach Club in Atlantic Beach, Nassau County, where images showed the impact of the severe weather.

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for parts of Queens and Nassau County until 7:15 p.m. EDT. Nassau County is located on Long Island, and residents were warned to take shelter as severe weather moved across the region.

Tornado Warning As Flooding Hits New York

New York City Emergency Management urged residents in affected areas to immediately move indoors or to the lowest floor of their buildings and stay away from windows.

Flooding was reported in several parts of New York City as heavy storms moved through Thursday evening. Rainwater was seen pouring onto a subway platform at Penn Station, while heavy rain was also reported in Chelsea, Manhattan, and near the Clearview Expressway in Bayside, Queens.

A separate Flash Flood Warning covered parts of New York and New Jersey until 7:45 p.m. EDT. The warning included Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island, along with several counties in New Jersey.

The National Weather Service said thunderstorms were producing heavy rain, with 1 to 1.5 inches already reported and rainfall rates of up to 1.5 inches per hour possible. Another 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall, with flash flooding already occurring or expected to begin shortly.

The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and Long Island Expressway were also closed at sections in Queens as severe weather affected the area. Residents were urged to remain weather aware and avoid downed power lines and flooded areas.
