The Indian women’s hockey team suffered a 2-0 defeat against the reigning Olympic and World champions, the Netherlands, in their first second-round match of the FIH Women’s World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands on August 21 (Friday). The result leaves India’s hopes of reaching the tournament’s semi-final hanging by a thread.
The hosts secured their victory through clinical executions of set pieces, relying entirely on penalty corners to break through the Indian defense. Yibbi Jansen opened the scoring early, finding the back of the net in the 2nd minute with a powerful drag flick
Despite conceding the early goal, India showed remarkable resilience to keep the scoreline at 1-0 for the remainder of the first half. Goalkeepers Savita Punia and Bichu Devi produced crucial saves. However, the Dutch dominance in possession eventually paid off again in the third quarter. Frederique Matla doubled the Netherlands’ lead in the 38th minute, converting another penalty corner.
Despite the spirited defensive performance, the Indian forward line struggled to create clear goal-scoring opportunities against a highly organized and formidable Dutch defense. While players like Navneet Kaur and Salima Tete made promising circle entries and earned a critical penalty corner opportunities, they were unable to find the goal.
India Need To Win Final 2nd Round Game Vs Australia
The defeat puts India in a precarious position. Having finished 2nd in Pool D behind China, and entering the second round with one point carried over from a goalless draw against England on Thursday, India remains stuck on a single point in this phase. The Netherlands, meanwhile, have maintained their flawless run, continuing their winning streak after previously defeating Australia, and have all but confirmed their spot in the semi-final.
Their final 2nd Round game is now a do-or-die encounter. They will face Australia on Sunday, August 23. Australia’s first 2nd round match ended in a 1-1 draw against China.
