A brush fire is spreading rapidly in the Verdi area, with crews responding to the blaze west of Peavine. The fire has so far burned an estimated 15 to 20 acres, with firefighters reporting a rapid rate of spread.

Crews are currently working to contain the vegetation fire, with the situation developing.

The fresh fire comes after firefighters were already working north of Reno and were nearing full containment on the massive Bug and Stallion fires, even as elevated fire weather and a Red Flag Warning raise concerns about new flare-ups. The Bug Fire has burned 93,733 acres since it started August 8. It is 94% contained. The Stallion Fire, which started August 10, has burned 40,691 acres and is 98% contained. Both fires were caused by humans.

A total of 249 personnel are assigned across the two fires. Resources include two crews, 15 engines and water tenders, two helicopters and nine pieces of miscellaneous heavy equipment.

Crews recently responded to another fuel ignition within the fire perimeter. Such ignitions are common because larger fuels can retain heat and continue to smolder even after an area has reached containment. Over the weekend, crews are continuing suppression repair while maintaining an emphasis on initial attack if requested.
