Republicans Face Fresh Midterm Warning as Democrats Gain Party Identification Edge

Midterm elections traditionally pose challenges for the party occupying the White House, with the president's party often losing congressional seats.

Republicans are facing a fresh warning ahead of the 2026 US midterm elections, with new Gallup figures showing Democrats holding their strongest advantage in party identification in more than a decade.

During the second quarter of 2026, 49 per cent of Americans either identified as Democrats or said they leaned towards the Democratic Party, compared with 39 per cent who identified as Republicans or leaned Republican. The 10-point Democratic advantage matched the margin recorded during the first quarter and was the largest lead for either party in Gallup's quarterly tracking since at least 2015.

The figures represent a major shift from the end of 2024, when Republicans and Republican-leaning independents held a 47 per cent to 43 per cent advantage over Democrats.

Gallup's data showed that 31 per cent of Americans identified directly as Democrats, while 25 per cent identified as Republicans. Independents accounted for 44 per cent of respondents. The six-point gap between Democrats and Republicans was the widest Democratic advantage in Gallup's measure since the second quarter of 2015.
