Two municipal police officers were stabbed Monday evening during an attack in central Toulouse, France, authorities said. The two officers, a man and a woman, were on foot patrol on Rue d’Austerlitz in the Wilson district when they were attacked by a man armed with several knives. According to reports cited by local authorities, the suspect was carrying three knives.

The attacker allegedly approached the officers after gesturing toward them and then lunged at them with a knife. Reports said he targeted the male officer’s throat during the assault. Both officers sustained injuries, including wounds to their arms, but the injuries were described as minor.

The suspect was arrested at the scene after a struggle with the officers. According to Toulouse’s deputy security officer, the confrontation was extremely difficult, and the officers were able to subdue the man with the help of tear gas.

The attacker was subsequently taken to hospital.

Toulouse Mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc confirmed the attack, saying the two officers were assaulted while working to ensure the safety of people in the city. He also said that remarks of a terrorist nature were reported during the incident.

“Tonight, two municipal police officers were assaulted with a bladed weapon while they were on the ground, on Rue d’Austerlitz, to ensure the safety of the people of Toulouse. Terrorist-motivated remarks were also reported. The two officers were taken in charge at Rangueil University Hospital. The perpetrator was quickly apprehended. My thoughts go out to our two officers, to their families and to their colleagues. I extend all my support to them and wish them a swift recovery,” Moudenc tweeted.

The mayor said the officers were taken to Toulouse-Rangueil University Hospital and expressed his support for the officers, their families and colleagues while wishing them a swift recovery.

Authorities have not provided further details about the motive for the attack.
