After being appointed as England’s new Test captain, Joe Root quickly established his dominance. The 35-year-old announced on Wednesday that the night curfew would be lifted and the players would have more freedom as long as they behaved appropriately. Following the Ashes, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) enforced a curfew after the Three Lions players were found guilty of repeatedly visiting casinos and engaging in binge drinking.

Following Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket, Root was appointed England’s Test captain. The batter’s first task would be to play three Test matches against Pakistan starting on August 19. Additionally, Brendon McCullum has been replaced as England’s Test coach by Stephen Fleming.

“There’s not going to be a curfew. I don’t think this needs to be a big deal, to be honest. Be adults, look after yourselves, look after each other. We need to create a good, strong culture where you know when the right time is to celebrate and enjoy a win or to have a sensible beer, but remember, you’ve got to play for England,” Root said on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast on Wednesday.

“I don’t want people to feel like they can’t enjoy winning a Test match because they want to have a beer or, at the right time, let their hair down, and then that’s absolutely fine. We’re human beings at the end of the day,” he added.

Concerns about player conduct during the Ashes led to the introduction of the night curfew. After England defeated New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s, Stokes and Gus Atkinson were thot to have violated the limits. Even so, it was unclear exactly how the rules were being implemented.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the same development. The English board said in a statement that Root and Fleming, the new head coach, made the decision to lift the curfew.

Marcus Trescothick will be in charge for the Pakistan series for the time being, but it is important to note that Fleming will take over as captain of the Test team later this year.

“We have a Test captain and coach who are looking at how they set team standards and culture. As part of this, the curfew will no longer be in place. We will ensure all players have a clear understanding of expectations when they come together for the upcoming Test series,” the ECB stated in their statement.
