Bangladesh are currently taking on Australia in the first Test of the two-match series at the TIO Stadium in Darwin. While many expected Bangladesh to crumble under pressure in a series down under, they surprised everyone. They bundled out Australia for 198 in the first innings, and have now shone with the bat, as they have taken a big lead at lunch. The star with the bat has been Tanzid Hasan Tamim as with this spectacular knock, he has become the first player to achieve a massive feat.

Tanzid Hasan Tamim scored 101 runs from 197 deliveries in an innings studded with 8 fours and 1 six. This was a historic knock, as this was the first Test Century ever scored by a Bangladeshi player on Australian soil. The previous highest score by a Bangladeshi in a Test match in Australia was 76 by Hannan Sarkar in 2003.

In fact, this is the second instance that a Bangladesh batter has scored a Test Century against Australia. Shahriar Nafees was the first to do so, when he scored 137 against Australia in 2006 at Fatullah. Tanzid Hasan Tamim is also the first Bangladeshi opener to score an overseas century since Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s 137 against South Africa in Durban in 2022.

Bangladesh On Top

At Tea on Day 2 of the first Test in Darwin, Bangladesh were firmly in control, holding an 88-run lead over Australia. The visitors piled on the misery for the Australian bowlers, reaching 286/3 at the break.

The foundation for this commanding position was laid on Day 1 when Bangladesh’s pace attack stunned the hosts. After Australia chose to bat first, fast bowler Hasan Mahmud delivered a spectacular performance, claiming 6 wickets for 55 runs. Mahmud dismantled the reigning World Test Champions, bowling Australia out for a paltry 198. Only Steve Smith offered serious resistance, top-scoring with 71 before falling to Mahmud’s brilliance.

In reply, Bangladesh’s batters took full advantage of a flattening pitch. The star of the show was 25-year-old opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim, who struck his maiden Test century in just his second Test match. Tanzid shared a solid 102-run partnership with Mominul Haque (49), and then built a crucial 93-run stand with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.
