Bangladesh ended their 23-year-wait and defeated Australia in the first game of the two-match Test series to go 1-0 ahead. Bangladesh, who had only managed one win against the Kangaroos before the Darwin game, chased down the target of 57 at the loss of only one wicket. Former Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque hit the winning boundary for his team and remained unbeaten on 30. Shadman Islam scored an unbeaten 25 off 42 balls.

Opting to bat first, Australia managed a total of 198 on the board in their first innings. Steve Smith was the only Australian batter who breached the 30-run mark and scored 71 off 109 balls. Hasan Mahmud shone with the ball and took a six-fer. Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain scalped two wickets each.

Bangladesh breached the 400-run mark and put on a total of 426 on the board to take a 228-run lead. Tanzid Tamim created history and became the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century Down Under.

Najmul Hossain Shanto played a captain’s knock and scored 84 off 126 balls. Meidy Hasan scored a vital 65 off 154 balls as Bangladesh breached the 400-run mark.

Australia had their hopes pinned on their batters, but they failed to breach the 300-run mark again. Cameron Green scored a century but he lacked support from the other end. Smith scored 44 off 88.

Asked to chase down a target of 57, Bangladesh completed the job in 14.2 overs on the fourth day’s play. Bangladesh had registered their first Test win against Australia at home in 2017. Nine years later, they did the unthinkable and stunned the 2023 World Test Championship winners.

Bangladesh can join India in elite list

Should Bangladesh draw or win the second Test match, they will create history and become only the second Asian team after India to win a Test series Down Under. India etched their name in history under Virat Kohli’s captaincy in 2018-19. In 2020-21, India emulated their heroics under Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy.
