Prosecutors in the Charlie Kirk murder case say an inscription on a bullet found at the scene, along with a text message, shows defendant Tyler Robinson targeted Kirk over his political views.

Prosecutors in the Charlie Kirk murder case say an inscription found on a bullet at the scene proves the conservative activist was killed because of his political views, according to a report from the Independent. The engraved bullet reportedly read “Hey Facist! CATCH!” and prosecutors argue this phrase points directly to defendant Tyler Robinson’s political motivations behind the shooting. Whether Robinson acted out of political animus could prove critical, either helping prosecutors secure the death penalty or helping his defense team take that punishment off the table entirely.

Both sides have now filed competing court documents centered on whether aggravating factors exist that would make Robinson eligible for capital punishment if he is convicted. Those factors include the question of political targeting, as well as whether the shooting put thousands of others at risk during Kirk’s September 10 event at Utah Valley University.

Where the case stands

Robinson, 23, faces multiple charges including aggravated murder and has not yet entered a plea. He turned himself in to authorities a day after the shooting took place.

The newest filings come after a five day preliminary hearing held in July, during which prosecutors presented what they described as overwhelming evidence against Robinson. Defense attorneys, meanwhile, worked to cast doubt on the findings presented by forensic analysts.

Judge Tony Graf is expected to determine whether the case moves forward to trial after hearing from both sides again on September 1.

Prosecutors point to bullet and text message

In a document filed late Tuesday, prosecutors described the engraved bullet found in the suspected murder weapon as an overt political reference. They also cited a text message allegedly sent by Robinson about Kirk, in which he wrote that he had had enough of Kirk’s hatred and that some hate cannot be negotiated away.

Robinson’s attorneys have pushed back, arguing that the text message alone does not provide strong enough evidence to establish a political motive behind the shooting.

Kirk’s influence and the case’s personal dimension

Before he was killed, Kirk and Turning Point USA, the organization he co-founded, played a major role in mobilizing young conservative voters and helping President Trump win a second term in office.

Prosecutors have also drawn attention to Kirk’s public opposition to same sex marriage and gender affirming care, contrasting it with Robinson’s personal life. Robinson was reportedly in a romantic relationship with his roommate, Lance Twiggs, who told investigators he had considered a gender transition around the time of Kirk’s killing.

Prosecutors allege Robinson left a handwritten note for Twiggs stating that he had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and that he took it.

However, in a recorded interview played in court last month, Twiggs said he had never heard Robinson discuss Kirk before the shooting occurred. He added that Robinson rarely spoke about gender issues or LGBTQ+ rights, though he did occasionally bring up politics, including discussions about Trump.
