India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test at Galle to keep the World Test Championship (WTC) hopes alive. India needed to win almost all their remaining games, including two against New Zealand later this year, to keep realistic hopes of the WTC final. The win over Sri Lanka will give the team much-needed confidence after a series of disappointing results.

The win helped India improve their Points Percentage (PCT) in the WTC table. India now have five wins in 10 matches, with a PCT of 53.33. They’re still placed fifth, behind Bangladesh, but have taken a good step towards the WTC table.

The hosts will be proud of the performance of Sonal Dinusha, who scored a century in the first innings and a brilliant 84 in the second.
