An Indian national working as a caregiver for an elderly couple in Jerusalem was killed in an attack at their home last month, Israeli authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the case. The victim, Rajiv Acharya, was reportedly attacked with a sharp object while working at the couple’s residence. He suffered severe blood loss from his injuries and later died.
Israeli authorities have identified Avior Zaken, the grandson of the elderly couple, as a suspect in the case. According to an indictment submitted by Jerusalem District Attorney’s Office prosecutor Gini Avner, Zaken, who had been released from prison in July, visited his grandparents’ home for lunch.
Acharya was at the house at the time, where he worked as a caregiver for Zaken’s grandfather. The indictment alleges that after lunch, Acharya went to his room to rest. Zaken then entered the room and, during a conversation with Acharya, decided to kill him.
The Indian Embassy in Israel said it was in close contact with Israeli authorities following Acharya’s death. “The Embassy is in close contact with the Israeli authorities, who have informed that a suspect has been arrested and that the investigation is ongoing to establish the full facts and circumstances of the incident.”
Acharya’s mortal remains were flown back to India last week.
His cousin, Parichit Acharya, told Sikkim Chronicle that the family was seeking proper legal proceedings through the Indian Embassy, as well as financial justice.
He said Rajiv Acharya is survived by his elderly parents, wife and two children.
The Indian community in Israel has called for a thorough investigation and the prosecution of those responsible. Community members have also sought financial support and compensation for Acharya’s family.
They have urged authorities to strengthen measures to protect foreign workers from violence and abuse. The circumstances surrounding Acharya’s death remain under investigation.
