The Indian duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand pulled off a massive upset at the BWF World Championships 2026 after defeating Japan’s seventh-seeded Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi in straight games (21-16, 21-12) to secure a spot in the women’s doubles quarterfinals. When it meant most, the Indian team performed calmly despite facing one of the top-ranked pairings in the event going into the Round of 16. As they continue to establish themselves as the top players in Indian women’s doubles, Treesa and Gayatri’s triumph is a huge mark on the international scene. Their victory also keeps their chances of adding to the Indian medal tally alive by advancing into the tournament’s final eight.
Treesa-Gayatri Pull Off Major Upset
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated the seventh-seeded Japanese duo 21-16, 21-12 in straight games. The Indians secured their spot in the World Championships quarterfinals by controlling the match and preventing Iwanaga and Nakanishi from forcing a deciding game. This was also one of the biggest victories of the Indian pair’s campaign in New Delhi, and the outcome is especially noteworthy considering the Japanese pair’s World No. 7 ranking.
Treesa-Gayatri Hail Home Crowd Advantage
Both Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly were all praise for their supportive home crowd in Delhi. They revealed that at times when they were under pressure, the crowd helped them bounce back.
“At one point, we were under pressure, but the crowd was carrying us. So, I just want to thank them for that, and I just want them to keep believing in us, and I hope to give them more reasons to celebrate,” Gayatri Gopichand told Times Now.
“I think the crowd is amazing. I think even when we were in the first game, when we were down, the crowd really carried us. And I think when it’s happening on home soil, we just show our powerful matches and everything that they can see,” Treesa Jolly added to it.
The Quarterfinal Challenge
Treesa and Gayatri advance to the round of eight, where the level of competition will increase, thanks to their triumph. The Indian duo will now try to maintain their momentum and advance farther into the tournament after defeating the seventh-ranked Japanese team. After defeating Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez in straight games to start their run, they put up another strong showing against Iwanaga-Nakanishi.
The Indian pair see the quarterfinal as a chance to establish themselves on one of the largest badminton stages. Under the pressure of a World Championships elimination match, the Indian duo has already demonstrated their ability to manage a higher-ranked opponent. Now that they have a chance to advance to the semi-finals, they must continue to play with the same consistency and poise that allowed them to defeat the Japanese duo in straight games.
