Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s planned return to the UK may be driven by concerns over inheritance and influence as Prince William’s future reign approaches.

Prince Harry’s decision to move back to the UK might be less about mending fences with his family and more about protecting his financial future before Prince William takes the throne. Royal insider Kinsey Schofield told the publication Page Six that people close to William believe inheritance and money are playing a real role in Harry and Meghan Markle‘s decision to return to the UK. According to Schofield, there’s a sense within William’s circle that Harry and Meghan know time is limited and want to reestablish their standing, influence, and closeness to the monarchy while King Charles is still on the throne.

Schofield, who hosts the podcast “Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered,” explained that William, as next in line for the British throne, will eventually have far more control over how the monarchy operates going forward. She said there’s a belief that he’ll be significantly less accommodating than his father has been, and that Harry is well aware of this. Her sources see the timing of the move as an attempt to secure a foothold before William becomes the one deciding how much access Harry and Meghan actually get.

Genuine worry inside William’s camp

Schofield said she’s picked up on real concern within the Wales household about what this move could mean for William, Kate Middleton, and their children. She pointed to the backlash that followed the couple’s Oprah Winfrey interview, saying the Waleses haven’t forgotten the surge in threats and online harassment that followed. There’s fear, she said, that another round of interviews, leaks, or public accusations from Harry and Meghan could reignite that same hostility.

Schofield went further, saying that within the palace, Harry and Meghan are viewed as unpredictable. She described them as loose cannons who aren’t always reliable when it comes to how they characterize events publicly.

Skepticism over the real motive

There’s also doubt among William’s confidants that the couple’s sudden desire to live closer to the royal family has much to do with King Charles’s health. Charles, 77, announced his cancer diagnosis in February 2024. Schofield relayed a pointed question being asked inside the palace: where was that same concern when Prince Philip was hospitalized and Harry and Meghan were preparing to sit down with Oprah? She added that people are also asking where that sensitivity was while the couple filmed their Netflix documentary during Queen Elizabeth II’s final months.
