Why is Putrada Ekadashi Observed?

The story of Putrada Ekadashi, as found in the Bhavushya Purana, centres around King Mahijit – also called Suketuman – of Mahishmati. With no heir to succeed him, he sought answers from the wise sage Lomash. Using his vision, the sage informed the king that in his past life he was a poor merchant. One day, finding himself parched, he made it to a pond to drink water where a cow and her newborn calf were also quenching their thirst. He is believed to have pushed them aside to greedily drink the water which is what caused him to be childless in this life, despite being royalty. It was Sage Lomash who suggested the king and his queen, to obserbe a fast on Putrada Ekadashi and worship Lord Vishnu with utmost devotion. Following what the sage said, the king was soon blessed with a brave and noble son.
