The two-year-old son of Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver has died after reportedly drowning in a swimming pool at the family’s home in Texas. The NFL team confirmed the child’s death on Saturday, expressing its condolences to Oliver and his family.
“It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent,” the Bills said in a statement. “We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss.”
The child reportedly drowned on 28 June in Huffman, Texas.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at the time that deputies found a toddler unresponsive in a swimming pool at a property in the 500 block of Lago Trace Drive.
The child was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Sheriff Gonzalez said in a Facebook post two days after the incident.
He described the death as a “tragic incident” and said an investigation was under way.
The Houston Chronicle reported on the drowning at the time but did not identify the child.
A dispatcher for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office was not immediately able to provide further information on Saturday. Oliver, 29, was selected by the Bills in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft and has played defensive tackle for the team throughout his professional career.
