Rain threat looms large over the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo. India will be trying to win the series 2-0, which will be significant to their chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final; however, the weather for the Test does not look that great, and there is some chance that the game will see frequent rain breaks.
According to AccuWeather, there is rain predicted on all five days of the Test, which gets underway on August 23 at the Sinhalese Sports Club. The conditions are expected to stay overcast for most of the game, so fast bowlers might also have a greater say in the Test, which could force the captain and coach to make changes to the playing XIs.
Why India Would Not Want A Draw?
If rain takes out significant time from the game, then a draw could be a possibility. India are placed fifth on the WTC table with a win percentage of 53.33. If they win the Test, they move to fourth on the table. They’ll have two tough series following the Sri Lanka tour, against New Zealand away, and they’ll also host Australia in early 2027, so India would like to win all matches they are expected to win.
Changes In Playing XI?
Meanwhile, India will face a selection dilemma ahead of the Test, mainly concerning Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm spinner hasn’t been in great form, and with Sri Lanka having multiple left-handers in the team, India might be tempted to play an off-spinner in Saransh Jain. There were signs that India are mulling over playing Saransh. The spinner bowled two days out from the game and also did a handy net session with the bat. Kuldeep, meanwhile, sought rest during practice and wasn’t present on the eve of the game. But the weather could also tempt India to play an extra seamer in Auqib Nabi or Gurnoor Brar.
