Harsha Bhogle hailed Devdutt Padikkal as he completed his second Test century during the first day of play on Sunday (August 23) in the 2nd Test between India and Sri Lanka at the iconic Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, as he continued his remarkable run of form following his comeback to the national team after a long hiatus.

Bhogle claimed that his ton in Colombo was a different kind of knock from the number three batter of the Indian team. The cricket-turned-commentator stated that India has found a good player in the longest format of the game.

“Very different kind of century from Padikkal today. After the early strokes of luck, he displayed patience and showed some fine temperament. India have found a very good player. There will be challenges ahead, but for now, it is time to acknowledge what we have here,” wrote Bhogle on X.

Devdutt Padikkal’s Incredible Form

Padikkal has had a coming-of-age series after scoring a knock of 167 in the series opener in Galle in the first innings before making 44 runs in the second match. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star was playing his first match for India since the Perth Test in November 2024 against Australia. Following Sai Sudharsan’s injury, he got a chance in the playing XI and has cemented his position in the team.

Before the series started, Padikkal also scored a century in the sole warm-up game India played against a Sri Lanka Cricket XI at Colombo’s NCC Ground.

Post the day’s play, Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak hailed Padikkal and his preparation coming into the series.

β€œHis intent, temperament and the pace with which he batted looked good. It is a good sign for us. He has been waiting for his turn and I am happy with the way he has prepared for this opportunity. He has done well at number three, previously Sai Sudharsan too did well though he did not get hundreds. Both Padikkal and Sudharsan are top-order batters, they can open too against the new-ball. For now, Padikkal has done well,” said Kotak.
