Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
\n\nUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused the Trump administration of taking steps that appear designed to pressure Kyiv into surrendering to Russia. The charge deepens a row between the two governments that has now run for a week, and it comes with a fresh offer on Russian refineries.
\n\nWashington wants Ukraine to stop hitting Russian oil refineries. Zelensky said he has proposed a deal: Ukraine would hold off on Russian diesel targets if the U.S. supplies more Patriot air-defense missiles to protect Ukrainian facilities. He said the American side seems to want only an end to the strikes on Russian refineries. If Ukraine hits those sites anyway, he warned, “they will disconnect us from something.”
\n\nHe tied the urgency to U.S. politics. “We have dangerous days ahead of the elections,” he said, referring to the Nov. 3 midterms.
\n\nHis conclusion was careful but pointed. “I believe steps have been taken to convince Ukraine to capitulate,” he said. He added that he is not claiming this is what American partners are aiming for, and he does not want to believe they think the war could end sooner at Ukraine’s expense. “But that’s how it looks,” he said.
