Dolores Huerta, the prominent US labour leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the United Farm Workers union with Cesar Chavez, died at the age of 96 on Wednesday. Huerta died at her home in Bakersfield, California, on Wednesday, 28 October. The cause of death was cancer, Erik Olvera, a spokesman for her family, said.

A leading figure in the movement to improve conditions for migrant farm workers, Huerta helped organise strikes and boycotts in the 1960s and 1970s that secured union recognition and better working conditions for thousands of agricultural labourers.

In early 2026, Huerta told The New York Times that Chavez had raped her decades earlier. Her account emerged as the newspaper investigated allegations that Chavez had sexually abused women and underage girls. Huerta said she had kept the assault private because she did not want to damage the labour movement.
