Exclusive: “Tata Group Has Steered Through Challenges Before,” Say Experts On N Chandrasekaran Announcement

Following the decline in majority of Tata Group’s shares, market experts spoke to Times Now Digital about the impact on the stocks and on sentiment post N Chandrasekaran’s announcement. N Chandrasekaran in his statement announced that his current tenure as Chairman of Tata Sons comes to an end on Feb 20, 2027 and he will not seek reappointment (detailed statement given below).

Market Experts On Tata Group Stocks & N Chandrasekaran’s Announcement

Independent market expert, Ambareesh Baliga told Times Now Digital, “stock markets have been speculating about N Chandrasekaran stepping down looking at the acrimony and division within Tata Sons as well as across the Trusts. However, when the event actually happens, markets react and that’s exactly what we have witnessed as far as the Group stocks are concerned. N Chandrasekaran seems to have stepped down on his own terms. I think 6 months is a good enough time to identify a successor and I believe Noel Tata will have to show his mettle and provide leadership during this period. With N Chandrasekaran stepping down, we could see some modification in capital allocation. Though Air India as well as Big Basket acquisition has been a bone of contention due to losses and mounting capital burn, we could see Big Basket as a casualty. I won’t be surprised if it’s put on the block soon. Air India on the other hand, having a Tata Group legacy may continue to have capital allocation albeit with a moderation. We have witnessed such uncertain periods for the Tata Group, when Ratan Tata had taken over in early 1990s and more recently during the Cyrus Mistry imbroglio, but it has always managed to steer through. So this time it shouldn’t be any different.”

G. Chokkalingam Head of Research at Equinomics Research told Times Now Digital, “this kind of panic reaction as far as the Tata Group stocks is concerned is not needed. Tata Group is an institution and largest industrial house in terms of revenues. Such an institution would be able to easily attract right professional leadership from the market. Tata Group stocks especially the ones which derive a dominant portion of revenues from the domestic economy are likely to recover soon.”

N Chandrasekaran’s Detailed Statement:

“I have completed 40 years of professional life at the Tata Group. I am grateful for the immensely satisfying opportunity to contribute to this venerable institution. Leading Tata Sons over the past decade has been a great honour and a profound responsibility. My current tenure as the Chairman of Tata Sons comes to an end on Feb 20, 2027. Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved and recommended the extension of my next term for a period of five years, which was recorded and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board. Subsequently, the resolution was tabled in the Tata Sons Board on Feb 24, 2026. However, the proposal was not carried through because one of the Board Members did not support it, and in the absence of unanimous support, I chose to defer the decision. It has been 6 months since that Board meeting, and no resolution has been reached till date. Tata Sons is a very large institution and there are many strategic projects that are under critical stages of execution. It is not only necessary to have a leader in place to lead the Group beyond Feb 2027, but also clarity on leadership is important for employees, investors, partners and other stakeholders. Under these circumstances, earlier today, I have communicated to the Tata Sons Board, that I have decided not to offer myself for reappointment when my term ends on Feb 20, 2027. I have asked the Board to decide on the succession soon to ensure a proper transition. I am grateful for the support of all stakeholders.”
