Legendary former Australia batter David Warner has officially been fined and ordered to install a breathalyser lock in his vehicle after pleading guilty to a drink-driving charge. The 39-year-old appeared in court on Tuesday, August 18, to hear his sentence. He had formally admitted to a “middle range” drink-driving offense in July,
The incident that led to these charges occurred earlier this year in April. According to police reports presented in court, David Warner was driving a van when he abruptly stopped just short of a random police breath testing site.
This evasive action caught the attention of local authorities. He was subsequently approached, breath-tested at the scene, arrested, and transported to a local police station for further processing. Authorities noted that Warner had consumed three glasses of wine before getting behind the wheel to drive to his family home.
Fines And Interlock Device Mandate
During the sentencing at Sydney’s Waverley Local Court, Judge Clare Farnan formally convicted the cricket star of the crime and issued him a fine of 1,500 Australian dollars. Additionally, the judge mandated a strict restriction on his driving privileges to ensure road safety.
David Warner has been ordered to hold an “interlock” license for a period of 12 months. Under this specific legal condition, he is required to install a breathalyser device in his vehicle.
Addressing the court, David Warner’s defence lawyer, Awais Ahmad, did not make excuses for his client’s actions. Ahmad described Warner’s choice to drive that night as showing “impaired, impulsive and frankly foolish decision-making.”
However, the defense emphasized that the former cricketer has taken full responsibility for his mistake.
The lawyer also pointed out the heavy toll the incident has taken on David Warner, highlighting the intense and ongoing negative media attention, which has included personal attacks.
A Warning On Road Safety By The Judge
Before handing down the final sentence, the judge took a moment to address the broader implications of drink driving.
“Thankfully, on this occasion that decision did not have consequences for other people, but I accept it did have consequences for Mr Warner,” the judge noted during the proceedings.
Following the conclusion of the hearing, David Warner quickly departed the court premises.
