India won the first leg against New Zealand and clinched the five-match T20I series 3-2. The Men in Blue sealed the series win early by winning the first 3 games. They lost the last two fixtures. India backed their openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma and they played all five games. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi only played two games in the series which Ishan Kishan missed due to an injury. Kishan suffered an injury during the series opener. He returned for the last two games.

The management's decision to drop Sooryavanshi didn't go down well with former chief selector, Kris Srikkanth. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth called out the management for creating an insecure environment for the players.

"I can’t understand why Vaibhav Suryavanshi didn’t play the last two games. He is in excellent form and proved himself in New Zealand conditions in the previous game. You have to groom this boy, and instead you play him one match and drop him in the next. You are creating an atmosphere that’s insecure for players, be it Samson or Suryavanshi. It’s foolishness that the management is doing," he said.
