\n\nAs Reliance Jio Platforms launched its much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) on Wednesday, Zerodha co-founder and CEO Nithin Kamath reflected on the telecom company's role in transforming India's digital economy and expanding opportunities for businesses over the past decade. In a post on X, Kamath stressed how affordable internet connectivity, alongside digital infrastructure such as Aadhaar and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), helped businesses like Zerodha scale up.
\n\nHe also pointed to Jio's contribution to the growth of India's capital markets, noting the sharp rise in the number of people investing in equities since 2016.
\n\nKamath shared a 2015 article that identified 10 businessmen to watch in 2016. The list featured Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani at the top, while Kamath was ranked sixth following Zerodha's decision to eliminate brokerage charges on delivery trades.
\n\nRecalling his reaction at the time, Kamath wrote, “When Jio was getting ready to launch in 2015, I remember being petrified to find myself on the list of 10 businessmen to watch in 2016. Mukesh Ambani was #1, and I was #6, mainly because we had just made delivery brokerage free. We were, and still are, ants compared to Reliance/Jio,” he wrote.
