Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
\n\nBrazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Sunday won a fourth term in office, defeating far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested runoff election. The result marks a comeback for the 80-year-old left-wing leader, who faced a strong challenge from the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The outcome also halts a right-wing wave that has been gaining ground across Latin America.
\n\nThe victory makes the 80-year-old leftist leader the first Brazilian president to be elected to the office four times. It also marks the first time since the return of direct presidential elections in 1989 that a candidate has won the presidency after finishing second in the first round.
\n\nBrazil's election authority declared the results as after 97.69% of polling sections counted, Lula had 51.74% of votes and Flávio Bolsonaro had 48.26%. Lula was ahead by about 4.2 million votes.
\n\nThe election had been marked by disruption, with transportation delays and bad weather prompting calls for voting hours to be extended. Both candidates argued that the problems could affect the fairness of the contest.
