The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) shared the news on Thursday, Nov. 5. The last time anyone in the state died of measles was in 1990.

DHS Secretary Kirsten Johnson said the loss has left her deeply saddened. “My heart is broken for the family,” she said. She pointed out that the death of any child is a tragedy, and that it hurts even more when the cause is a disease that vaccines can prevent. Johnson urged people across Wisconsin to think about their own risk and take steps to protect their families.
