Ozempic, the globally popular weight loss drug, might be capable of a lot beyond making you shed kilos off the scale. Scientists are now investigating whether medicines that mimic the GLP-1 hormone could also offer benefits for brain health. A new study has linked GLP-1 receptor agonists to lower odds of stroke and Alzheimer's disease, raising fresh questions about their potential beyond metabolic health.

Published on September 25, 2026 in Neurology Genetics, the study used the genetic data in order to investigate the relationship between GLP-1 receptors agonists and their relationship to neurological conditions. The findings are promising but researchers are still cautioning against establishing the idea that the weight-loss medicines prevent either disease.

The researchers used a method called Mendelian randomisation, which examines genetic variations associated with a particular biological pathway to investigate potential causal relationships with health outcomes. Drawing on large genetic datasets covering participants of European, East Asian and African ancestry, the team found that genetically predicted GLP-1 receptor agonist effects were associated with 25% lower odds of stroke and 49% lower odds of Alzheimer's disease.

The analysis also found 28% lower odds of ischaemic stroke, which occurs…
