A formal written complaint has been lodged with Kolkata Police on behalf of the office of former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly over alleged threatening letters sent to Sourav Ganguly, his wife Dona Ganguly, and their staff, sources told Times Now.

According to the complaint, the Ganguly family has been receiving letters with objectionable remarks against Mr Ganguly for the past couple of months. The letters were initially ignored, with the assumption that they were from someone expressing personal resentment.

However, on Monday, the Ganguly family received two more letters in their Kolkata residence, which were markedly different in tone. Addressed to Sourav Ganguly and Dona Ganguly, the letters allegedly contained not only hate remarks but also “serious threats to the life and safety” of Mr Ganguly, Mrs Ganguly, and people working with them, sources close to the ex-Indian skipper told Times Now.

“The nature of the threats contained in the letters has caused serious concern among us. Since the letters have now escalated from hate/derogatory communication to explicit threats to life and personal safety, we believe that the matter requires immediate police intervention and investigation,” the complaint stated.

The written complaint further claims that the sender has been identified as Mr. Arun. It also states that the courier through which the letters were sent originated from Belgharia in the North 24 Parganas district.

Sources also claimed that a written complaint has been lodged with the Thakurpukur Police Station. Soon after receiving the complaint, Kolkata police have already launched an investigation. This matter has also been brought to the notice of the director of security of the West Bengal Police and the intelligence department of Kolkata Police, including senior officials of the law enforcement agency.

The former Indian captain Ganguly is currently the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). He is expected to return to the Delhi Capitals management for next season as part of his role as Director of Cricket at JSW Sports. He served as the Pretoria Capitals’ head coach in the 2025-26 season of the SA20 league.
