Youngsters cheer after election results in Belgrade, Serbia.
\n\nSerbian President Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat in parliamentary elections on Sunday, saying a student-led opposition movement has won a decisive victory, ending his 12 years in power. Vucic acknowledged the loss after early projections showed the Student List securing a clear majority in parliament, following nearly two years of protests over corruption and concerns about growing authoritarianism.
\n\n"We still do not have final results, on the basis of a sample … it is clear that we have lost these elections, the Student List has won," Vucic said in a televised statement.
\n\nHe said the movement was expected to win between 135 and 140 seats, while his own list would secure about 105.
\n\nAn early projection by pollsters Ipsos and CeSID, reported by broadcaster N1, put the Student List on 52% of the vote, compared with 39.3% for Vucic's list. The student-backed movement was projected to win 138 seats in the 250-member parliament, comfortably above the 126 needed for a majority.
\n\nFinal results had not been announced at the time of Vucic's concession.
