Texas Senate Election Result: James Talarico Leads Ken Paxton In Key Senate Battleground
\n\nDemocratic candidate James Talarico has taken an early lead over Republican Ken Paxton in the closely watched Texas Senate race, leading 59% to 39% with around 30% of the vote counted.
\n\nThe contest has emerged as a major battleground for both parties, with Democrats hoping to break their decades-long losing streak in statewide Texas elections. The state has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994, while its last Democratic Senate victory came in 1988.
\n\nPaxton's victory over incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary followed an expensive and bruising contest, with advertising spending exceeding $128 million. The Trump ally has also faced controversy, having been impeached by the Texas House in 2023 before being acquitted by the state Senate.
\n\nTalarico, meanwhile, defeated Representative Jasmine Crockett to secure the Democratic nomination. Although his campaign had raised substantially more than Paxton's by the end of June — $68.6 million compared with $9.2 million — Republicans outspent Democrats by more than $100 million on television advertising between May 26 and the end of September.
