US President Donald Trump called Elon Musk and asked him to lift restrictions on a military-grade version of Starlink in Ukraine, after the SpaceX chief ordered a slowdown of the satellite internet system, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The system was operating more normally on Thursday, shortly after the conversation, US and Ukrainian officials told the newspaper. Some Ukrainian officials said it had not returned to full functionality but was working at higher speeds than under the restrictions.

Trump told Musk he was frustrated that Starlink's speeds remained capped at around 100 miles per hour, officials said. The limit had rendered some Ukrainian offensive drones and interceptors ineffective against Russian attacks.

The conversation followed a Wall Street Journal report that Musk had ordered the slowdown. SpaceX and the White House have given differing accounts of whether Musk acted independently or at the administration's request.

Trump had told aides and allies this week that he wanted the restrictions reversed, according to the officials. Ukrainian forces rely on Starlink to support operations along the frontline.
