Violent Unrest in France Is Shaping US’ Midterm Campaign

Burning buildings and street clashes in France are now part of the U.S. campaign trail. President Donald Trump and his Republican allies are pointing to the unrest as a warning about what they say would happen in America if Democrats win in November.

Speaking at a rally in Kansas on Monday, Trump told the crowd that when they see “burning steeples and raging fires in France,” they should remember that this is what the radical “Dumocrats” want to do to America. He went further and claimed France is being “conquered, looted and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists and communists who hate Christianity” and “the Western civilization itself.”

Earlier in the day, he told reporters the situation in France is about “immigration, not schools.” That is a line he has pushed before, blaming immigration for the protests in several posts on Truth Social.

The framing fits a larger theme. The administration has used the French unrest to support its messaging on immigration and on the danger of “communists,” a group Trump has repeatedly said threatens American civilization. According to Axios, which reported on the story, the protests reportedly began over education grievances.
