The Pentagon has created a new military unit dedicated to expanding the use of autonomous and robotic systems, putting drones and artificial intelligence (AI) at the centre of the US military’s plans for future warfare.
\n\nIt is called Autonomous Warfare Command or AutoWarCom, as announced by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday, September 30.
\n\nThe command will be led by a four-star officer and will focus on building and deploying autonomous and robotic capabilities across the US military.
\n\nSo, what exactly will AutoWarCom do?
\n\nIn simple terms, AutoWarCom is intended to give the US military a dedicated structure for developing, acquiring and deploying autonomous weapons and robotic systems faster.
\n\nThat includes technologies such as:
\n\nHegseth said the Pentagon needs to move faster because “the pace of war is changing faster than the process to support it.”
\n\nWhy is the Pentagon doing this now?
\n\nThe biggest lesson for the US military has come from Ukraine, where inexpensive drones have become central to battlefield operations.
\n\nUkraine has used relatively cheap unmanned systems for reconnaissance and attacks against Russian forces, demonstrating how large numbers of inexpensive drones can complement — and in some cases threaten — much more expensive conventional weapons and…
