\n\nEnglish teachers, there’s something about them. Maybe it has to do with the language they teach, and the way, in most schools in India, there is a compulsion around speaking it. One can mess up with matras in Hindi, not know anything about trigonometry, or have no idea what makes Sanskrit just so difficult, and still float with their head above the water. But unfortunately (or fortunately? Depends on who is asking), that’s not quite the case with English.
\n\nPerhaps the country was colonised real good, or perhaps the world was. Either way, English as a language remains an important one in almost every Indian school. For starters, there is always the pressure to speak in English. And when the verbal pressure is not enough, there are punishments. When the punishments are not enough, there are fines. Maybe it is somewhere in that pressure that expectations begin to be placed on the person actually teaching the language in the first place. Or maybe it is something else.
