Instead, SenLinYu's 'Alchemised', published by Del Rey and Michael Joseph in September 2025, went to number one on the New York Times list, sold more than a million copies and took the science fiction and fantasy prize at the 2026 British Book Awards. Kirkus called it a doorstopper and meant it fondly. In a decade when everyone agrees nobody can concentrate on anything, the trade is quietly making its biggest bets on the heaviest books on the table.
\n\nThe evidence is not anecdotal. Rebecca Yarros's 'Onyx Storm', running to 544 pages, sold 2.7 million copies in its first week in January 2025, the fastest-selling adult fiction title in twenty years according to Circana BookScan, and held the top of the bestseller list for eight weeks. Her 'Empyrean' series has now passed twelve million copies in the United States alone. Around the same time, romantasy grew into a category worth an estimated 610 million dollars in American sales in 2024, up roughly a third on the year before.
