India spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule opened up on the selection headache for India ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, saying that the decision will be taken after looking at the conditions. Spin is set to play a big role in the two-match Test series, and India have four spinners – Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain – in the squad. However, all four getting a shot in the playing XI looks unlikely.

The Indian spinners got good bowling practice during the three-day warm-up game, with Jadeja picking two wickets in both innings. Kuldeep and Manav Suthar also picked wickets; however, Saransh went wicketless in the two innings.

“I think that call will be taken only once we reach Galle. But all 4 spinners have that uniqueness. We have got experience with Jaddu. We have got great accuracy levels with Manav Suthar and obviously, Saransh has got experience,” he said after the post match conference.

“He has performed really well in domestic cricket and that is how he has earned his spot. That experience will help us in making the decision if it is needed. Kuldeep, being a wrist spinner, it always helps to have a wrist spinner in the side. So that there is variety and all the four bowlers are looking forward to the Test match. So, we will decide only once we reach Galle.”

Why Didn’t Kuldeep Yadav Bowl In Second Innings?

Kuldeep Yadav didn’t bowl in the second innings, but Sairaj confirmed that he just wanted to take a break, adding that all other spinners got a good overs under their belt.

“He had a very good outing and he just wanted to take a break in terms of just understanding how his body is at and the rest of the spinners got that opportunity and they bowled their overs.

“One bowled 14, Manav bowled about 14-15 overs, Jaddu bowled about 14-15 overs. So, they got a very good outing, they understood how the pitch reacts and I think it was a great prep for them,” he added.

Sarfaraz Khan Added To India Squad

Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan was ruled out of the India tour of Sri Lanka due to a toe injury, with Sarfaraz Khan getting a call-up. Sarfaraz was left out of the India squad after a poor series against New Zealand. He was included in the Test series in Australia, but did not get a chance to play. But he now has another shot at cementing his place in the team, but it’ll be interesting to see if he gets a chance in the XI to prove himself.
